19.09.2013 - RESEARCH: FILM OPENINGS

In today's lesson we studied two different films.

In The English Patient ( directed by Anthony Minghella, 1996) the film opens with a close up shot of a person painting a cave drawing, the slow movement of the hand painting with oil paints shows the precision and patience it takes to paint an inspirational and beautiful painting on uneven surfaces. The paintings are of humans. After the close up shot of the hand, the camera cuts to an arial shot of the rich yellow, burnt copper coloured sand dunes.

In Made in Dagenham ( directed by Nigel Cole, 2010) the film opens with an establishing shot, a wide angle shot, of a crowd of car workers travelling to the Ford Car plant in Dagenham. The opening continues to the Ford Car interior with an establishing shot where the female employees work showing them sewing different pieces of materials for the cars. The opening was hectic and busy with loud noises of voices and sound effects such as car engines and bicycles throughout the 1.5 minute clip. There after the camera cuts to a close up shot of a worker taking her coat and jacket off and hanging them on the back of her chair.

  1. Sensible account of planning decisions but it needs to be a separate post.
The EP analysis is Ok but the Made in Dagenham very thin.
    Did you do Spooks 17.09.13?
