I have just completed my second lesson of Media Studies. In this lesson I watched the Coca Cola 'I wish' advert and dicussed the meaning of Coca Cola's messages.
In both television and pictorial adverts for Coca Cola the same advertising message is repeated every time - 'Coca Cola is happiness' and 'Coca Cola is sharing'. These messages portray the fact that Coca Cola is a brand where you can share your drink and still have happiness. It also advertises that if you drink Coca Cola, you will be special and unique. The song that was sung in the Coca Cola 'I wish' advert is very catchy and describes the brands message. The advert begins with a girl singing 'I wish I could share all the love thats in my heart, remove all the floors that keep us apart. I wish I could say all the things I should say, say them loud, say them clear for the whole wide world to hear!'. Even though these are only a few lines of the song, the message is very straight forward. As the advert progresses she begins to hand out Coca Cola bottles to various people who pass her and she makes eye contact with them. She wants them to have the same happiness and buzz that she has when she drinks Coca Cola! The advert is very realistic, true and relaxed. At the end of the comercial she gives a cheeky smile which is not posed. She is 'herself' throughout the advert.

I also looked at Father Christmas' role when advertising Coca Cola as a brand. He is a very happy character and portrays a relaxed feeling. He is a famous across the whole world at a very joyful, festive and reflective time of year. The pictorial advert has a giant Coca Cola bottle on the far left hand side. The bottle is wrapped up as a present and there is a tiny version in Father Christmas' hand as well. The background colour is red which is the traditional Coca Cola colour aswell as white. The bubbles that come out of both of the Coca Cola bottles have the odd snow flake in the air. At this time of year the Coca Cola bottle is tranformed into a Christmas one. I learn't in the lesson that Coca Cola were struggling to sell the drink when the temperature had dropped and it has got colder. The drink is traditionally drank in a warmer climate to be refreashing. They wanted the drink to have the same values but drank the whole year round. They kept the original message being told in every Coca Cola advert but changed the person advertising the drink.
As well as looking at Coca Cola adverts, I studied different genres of films. For instance, examples of film genres are, super hero, action and horror. I looked at the most popular films out at cinemas at the moment. Examples of the films are The Hunger Games, Mad Men 3 etc. I also looked at openings of films. I learn't that if you wanted the action to start straight away in a film and wanted to have artefacts or props such as a photo, you should use a real one not a photocopy. This means that it looks real and makes the viewer believe that is realistic!
