09.01.2014 - PLANNING: THE RULES OF FILM NOIR DOCUMENTARY

FILM NOIR DOCUMENTARY BBC FOUR

Me watching the documentary
I looked at using a BBC FOUR documentary about Film Noir as inspiration for editing my film. The use of dark backdrops, black dress, cold music adds a sense of eeriness and mysteriousness. The documentary explained the rules of Film Noir and why as a genre it is so successful - relating to 1950s action and adventure films to murder mysteries. Watching the nearly 15 minute clip, gave me inspiration to add a sense of question to my film, for example not knowing the young girls name, her suspected stalkers name as well as what's in the package she possession of. The use of gangsters, large amount of cash visible, expensive jewellery, police on constant patrol, femme fatales, criminals and flawed heroes - crime fiction that emerged in the United States during the Great Depression.

I also used the Film Noir wikipedia page for help, making use of the featured music as an influence for our music throughout our film as well as the costumes in film posters and factual information setting the contextual scene of the film.

  1. Your research into film noir is sound but shift this log entry to the start of the planning process.
