We started the first stages of filming in today's lesson. We brought up props and costumes as well as the camera, tripod and lights to our selected location - gold, gilded room in the Mansion. We chose this location as it looked grand and ornate; the importance of the meeting between 3 men contrasts with the grandeur of the room. The use of gold in the room makes the men look wealthy and important portraying a sense of fear and jeopardy. The use of gold in the room contrasts strongly with the brightness of the filming lights making the room appear large and richly decorated. The grandeur and brightness of the room counterfeits the period of the film opening. For example the period is Cold War so the feel and clothing of the era is dark and poor contrasting with the elaborate, richly decorated room creates an sense of importance and urgency.
We arranged our lights and props around a table and set up shot. We used authentic props such as a genuine newspaper from the early 1900s, fedora hats, trench coats, genuine family photos from the 1950s, hand-made cigarettes and a brown folder/file. We successfully filmed the scene that we intended to film and plan to film next week another scene in the same location.
I took responsibility for filming and directing the scene. I found that I was tempted to pan too fast causing some of the shots to blurry to be used or out of focus. Feedback from my teacher summarized that I needed to have more control of the camera when panning (not panning too fast), taking a variety of more shots and also not doing too many shots of the ceiling. I also found that it was difficult to keep the camera still even if it was attached to the tripod, I found I had better control of the camera if I hand held it. I found it difficult as it was my first time filming using a Canon D55. However it was an experience and now I have realized what I need to work on next time when I am filming.
Lastly I was pleased with:
1. Setting up the scene successfully in 15 minutes as well as the lights and set (pulling blinds down and removing any electrical resources commonly used in the 21st Century such as wireless internet as well as bright red fire alarm)
2. Using the Canon D55 for the first time and successfully creating/filming shots that can be used
3. Relying on my scene selection sheet as a prompt for setting up the scene - putting what props where and costumes used
4. Getting the right amount of light in each shot - not using natural light from the window in center focus but opening it a tiny bit to create an illusion of a large, obtuse window
5. Taking photos as well as filming footage that can be used as evidence of filming even if it isn't used

This is coming along well.
ReplyDeleteYou need to support this post with images from the internet to indicate style and period.
You also need an explanation why you chose the location (colour, period, light etc).
You need still pictures of the newspapers and Thomas's file with the photos.
Describe YOUR role in the filming ('I took responsibility for...") and the challenges ("I found that I was tempted to pan too fast and feedback from my teacher indicated that....."..." I was pleased with....")
I have done it ;)
