Action and Adventure Analysis - The Hobbit

Analysis of the trailer of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey

Today we looked at the action and adventure genre. We looked at two articles describing and explaining the forthcoming film The Hobbit (directed by Peter Jackson in 2012)

1.       Personal Camera effects or angles – low and high angle shots, hero shots, ECUs (makes you think you are a hobbit and ‘in’ with the action
2.       Mise-en-scene – The rolling hills surrounded by mountains, the hobbit dwelling, the cave, the mountains
3.       Sounds – the ‘adventure’ and pounding music suggesting it is an adventure or fantasy (unity of the ‘band of brothers’ or hobbits, sound of wind and danger of war or fighting)
4.       Editing – transcription from the cosy, safe refuge of the Shire with its warm colours and sheltering shapes to the icy wasteland and whistling of the wind of the dishevelled and violent world beyond the Shire (adds effects and reality)
5.       The warm vibrant colours – inside the shire to the icy wasteland beyond
6.       Computer editing – computer imagery or ‘photo shop’ of the rocky cave within a mountain
7.       Animated pictures – animals, massive ogre of a giant at the end falling on the congregation of hobbits, group of hobbits running etc
8.       Camera movement – fast movement when action occurs for example when the hobbits are fighting to slow movement inside the Shire or hobbit dwelling
