In our groups we discussed about what period our film opening would be set in. We had decided on the opening being set in the 1920s in previous lessons, however we changed our mind and decided the era of the 1940s would be more suitable. Reasons for choosing the 1920s were:
1. The 1920s is a common era to use in film openings such as ours as we are using 'Film Noir' as our inspiration
2. It would be fun to experiment with new fashion in the 1940s
3. We could combine fashion and make up of the 1920s and 1940s to create a unique and subtle take on 'Film Noir'
4. One of our film locations - Paddington Station could be transformed into a 1940s train station (obviously with use of technology and props!)
5. We can use costumes such as trench coats, red lipstick and vintage hats; all of which were used in the 1920s as well as the 1940s
I personally found websites that would help with the creative, make up side of the film opening. For example:
1. http://www.lipstickandcurls.net/blog/vintage-hair-and-vintage-make-up/ - is a website that shows you examples and information about the different eras of fashion from the 1920s to the 1990s. This can be used as inspiration to combine 1920s and 1940s fashion
2. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-2211196/Less-1940s-Hilarious-retro-make-tutorial-apply-vanishing-powder-rouge.html
- is a newspaper article from middle class tabloid newspaper 'The Daily Mail' - it shows you an authentic tutorial of how to put make up on 1940s style. The two women in the video are authentic to the period and both demonstrate the ways in which make up were used, for example use of powders, foundation as well as red lisptick. These three beauty items are still very much used today!
3. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1BdpPgSssM - is a video by beauty blogger/vlogger and Youtuber FleurDeForce - she is going to a 1940s theme fancy dress party and has made a tutorial of her getting ready for the party - commonly known on Youtube as a 'Get Ready With Me'. Although he outfit isnt authentic and exact from the period, she has used the era as inspiration. I hope to do this too for our film opening!
